APROPOS Mike Northeast’s comments (Gazette, January 13), on local development and the North Littlehampton Steering Group, at the recent Courtwick Lane Opposition Group (CLOG) meeting, one aspect raised more hackles than probably any other and Mr Northeast and colleagues should make note.

Overwhelmingly, those attending felt they had been frequently “let down” by the council – on occasions feeling decisions had been taken without enough “real” consultancy or that were probably against the best interests of residents.

Alongside that, despite their promises, developers regularly failed to do what they promised by way of infrastructure improvements.

Gleeson’s promises are minor in infrastructure terms. In return, they will add well over 1,000 new cars to one access point on the A259 and put in a new junction just to assist the length of queues already present.

We, in CLOG, do not see that as a good deal and see no benefit pertaining to the residents of Littlehampton.

Until there is a proper road system in this part of Sussex, traffic loads will soon become too great to sustain.

This alone will deter the type of person or company Littlehampton needs to encourage if the town is to grow.

Let me be clear. CLOG is not opposed to building new houses. The steering group should be concentrating on smaller brownfield sites which will also help improve Littlehampton’s “face to the tourists” – the real key to Littlehampton’s future.

Sadly, that is less profitable for developers – shame!

Although other estates (including mine) were built against protests, there seems to be a sea-change in people’s attitudes.

No longer will they tolerate development which is poorly conceived and planned and seemingly approved “on the nod” – they are much more concerned to see the town improve for the right reasons.

Councillors, beware! CLOG will be the first of many similar organisations!
