Pair leave wintry town: head for Arctic Circle

IF you thought Bexhill struggled with the recent winter weather spare a thought for Roger Lucas - he spent last week in the Arctic.

The 37-year-old local left the town to join seven intrepid Sussex fundraisers who took part in the Heart FM Arctic Survival Challenge last week.

After just one weekend training camp in Devon, Roger and his friend Jo Mozley, 30, of Harley Shute Road, joined the group who braved temperatures of minus 35 degrees Celsius during the eight-day ordeal.

They spent their days building shelters, boiling snow to keep up the supply of drinking water and collecting firewood.

On the last night the group slept in a snow hole they had dug over the course of the week.

So far the team has raised about 14,000 for Heart FM's help a Local Child campaign and Jo said they got through because it was for such a good cause.

"It was really exciting and completely amazing but it was such hard work," she said.

"There were a few tears but we were doing it to help children and so we all carried on. I had never done any outdoor adventure activities but I loved it.

"I was looking forward to my nice warm bed though."
