A23 still closed after crash between car and vehicle transporter

Emergency services were still at the scene of a serious road traffic collision on the A23 at 7pm tonight (September 16).

The crash occurred just after 3.30pm on the northbound carriageway just beyond its junction with the A272 at Bolney.

It involved a car transporter and a Fiat Punto, which overturned.

Sussex Police said the driver of the Fiat has been taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, with potentially life-threatening injuries.

The A23 northbound was still closed at 7pm.

Inspector Andy Judson said: “We are working hard to clear debris scattered across all three lanes and to establish exactly what happened.

“In the meantime a short local diversion has been set up, taking traffic off the A23 at the A272 junction and returning it to the A23 at Jeremy’s Garage.

“Nevertheless the area is probably best avoided if at all possible.”

The incident was complicated by an earlier collision on the southbound A23 in the same vicinity involving two cars which happened shortly after 2pm.

Anyone who witnessed the later collision is asked to email

collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.ukor phone 101, quoting Operation Ensfield.

Witnesses to the earlier collision should use the same contact details, but instead quote serial 703 of 16/9.
