The Vicar of Rusper gets behind the Christmas song ‘All I want for Christmas is a good night’s sleep’ produced by the campaign group Communities Against Gatwick Noise and Emissions – CAGNE.

A video promoting the song has been produced to highlight what CAGNE says is “the blight night flights has on the residents of Sussex, Surrey, and Kent as they try to sleep.”

A spokesperson said: “Gatwick Airport firmly blame the government Department for Transport and the airlines for night flights, so our requests for a night flight ban have to date gone unanswered. We thought Christmas was the perfect time to highlight the issue with our fun, but meaningful Christmas song.”

The spokesperson added: “Although CAGNE has serious debates with the government, local Members of Parliament, and Gatwick Airport management concerning the 11,200 summer night flights and the 3,250 winter night flights – this does not include the shoulder periods early in the morning or late at night – we felt this was a perfect time to sing to those in a position of authority to do something about night flights.

“For some night flights may be a way to see family and friends this Christmas, but there is a serious message that CAGNE wants heard. Night flights are anti-social and cause health problems to those on the ground that have their sleep disturbed, so all we want for them is a good night sleep with a ban on night fllights.”

A Gatwick Airport spokesperson said: “We know night time flying is a concern for some, but we also know many others benefit from having Gatwick on their doorstep, including jobs, business growth and economic prosperity. A balance therefore needs to be struck and we will ensure we operate within the quota restrictions on night flying set by the Department for Transport.”

Gatwick introduced a voluntary restriction on the noisiest aircraft operating at night and says it works closely with airlines to maintain on time performance to prevent flights from operating at night due to delays.
