The historic Plough And Attic Rooms pub in Rusper has served as a village inn since the 16th century.

But its future is now under threat because of the coronavirus pandemic - and a £50,000 fundraiser has been set up in a bid to save it.

Organiser Lynette Merries has launched a GoFundMe appeal and says:”Due to unforeseen circumstances amid the Covid-19 outbreak, we had to close our doors to our lovely customers on the 20 March 2020.

“It has been an awful time of uncertainty and a complete financial disaster.”

She said the pub’s private landlord was unable to give any discount on the pub’s monthly rent of £6,000.

“We find ourselves in the impossible situation of struggling to find the funds to cover all of our costs. We had a small amount of help from the government, but this doesn’t come close to covering all the rent and bills that are stacking up,” she said.

“We know there are a few more weeks of closure ahead of us and we will be incredibly vulnerable throughout that time. However, we really hope to come through the other side and successfully reopen our doors again.

“This is why we are asking for a bit of help from our loyal customers - and new friends yet to meet us.”

On the GoFundMe appeal, Lynette says: “We know it is a terrible time for all of you right now, we just hope that we can gain a bit of financial support to allow us to go on.”
