A Crawley benefit cheat who claimed more than £22,000 he was not entitled has been sentenced to 150 hours of unpaid work .

Syed Mudaser Hussain, of Heron Close, Langley Green, claimed Housing Benefit and Jobseekers Allowance between April 12 2010 and August 12 2012 on the basis that he had no savings and did not own or part own any other property.

However, Information was received that Hussain, 36, was the joint owner of another property in Langley Green and an investigation was carried out by officers from Crawley Borough Council and the Department for Work and Pensions.

A Crawley Borough Council spokesman said Hussain’s interest in the property took him over the £16,000 threshold to claim benefits.

Due to his false claims he was overpaid £16,618.25 Housing Benefit and Jobseekers Allowance of £6,097.39 – a total of £22,715.64. The overpayments will be paid back.

Hussain pleaded not guilty in Crawley Magistrates’ Court to both charges on June 25 2014.

However, at Hove Crown Court on May 12 he pleaded guilty to both counts and was sentenced to 150 hours’ unpaid work and ordered to pay costs of £1,000.

Peter Lamb, leader of Crawley Borough Council, said: “This is another good result for the council and reflects the good work of our Fraud Team, which the judge praised in court.

“Social security plays a vital role in our society. We take a very serious view of people who obtain benefit when they are not entitled to it and are committed to prosecuting those who commit fraud.

“If your circumstances change tell us; it’s the only way to be sure that you’re eligible for benefits.”
