Summer safety will be on the menu alongside bangers and burgers when firefighters invite residents to join them for a barbecue in Crawley next Sunday (July 19).
The event, which is running from 11am until 4pm in Tilgate Park, will be a great opportunity for residents to grab some free food whilst chatting to their local fire crew about enjoying the summer safely.
During the summer months dry ground and vegetation increases the risk of a fire in the open igniting or spreading out of control.
Each year West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is called to extinguish dozens of blazes where disposable barbecues or cigarettes have not been properly extinguished or bonfires have got out of control.
Crawley firefighters will be joined on the day by South East Coast Ambulance Service’s Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) who will be chatting about water safety, Sussex Police who will be offering free bike marking and a range of other partner organisations offering advice and support.
West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service’s Information Bus, Community Volunteers and a crashed car display will be in the park so that people can also access a host of interactive information on staying safe at home and on the road.
Crawley firefighter Tim Taylor, who has organised the event, said: “It’s easy to be complacent about the risks the warm weather brings so we are always trying to find effective ways to engage with our local community. We’re extremely grateful to Tesco Supermarket for kindly donating the food for the event.
“Unfortunately, a moment of thoughtlessness can put people’s lives, properties or wildlife at risk. We hope that by hosting this barbecue we’ll encourage lots of people to stop and chat with us and we can help everyone enjoy their summer safely.”
