Many are concerned that the pop-up cycleways - which have reduced the dual carriageway in Albion Way to one lane - will block emergency vehicles and will lead to accidents.

The cycle lanes are part of a Governhment scheme aimed at getting more people cycling but have led to traffic chaos since they were installed this week.

David Middleton said he drove through Albion Way yesterday and witnessed two ambulances struggling to get through the build-up of traffic.

People were trying to back into all sorts of places they weren’t supposed to go to let the ambulances through,” he said.

“And the only cyclist I saw was on the footpath.”

Linda Grubb said: “It’s not only daft but potentially very dangerous. If cyclists use this lane, then cars coming up from Worthing Road in the right hand lane who want to turn left into Waitrose may not see cyclists coming up in the cycle lane on the left hand side.”

Claire Briscoe said: “It’s absolutely ridiculous! Why would they take away a whole lane for bikes, with the autumn on its way, there will naturally be less people cycling and more people driving.”

Janet Hawkes added: “The blocked off section round the Sainsbury roundabout is causing confusion for cyclists. One pulled out in front of me in the car lane. Accident sure to happen there.”

Sophy Holden said: “How can anyone think that reducing two lanes to one, in the middle of any town’s one way system, would cause anything but pointless queues and traffic congestion? What planet do these people live on?”

Kaz Taylor said she had just driven through the town. “There was a lot of backed up traffiic and not one cyclist in sight.”

Jacki Cornwell added: “It’s a waste of money and causing unnecessary chaos and frustration.”

Karen Thompson said: “The only cyclist I saw yesterday when driving into town was cycling on the pavement alongside the cycle lane that we were all queued up next to.”

Tracy Jane said: “A total waste of money.”

Joyce Wormull added: “It’s a shame the money wasted on this shambles was not put to mending the roads which would help the cyclists as well.”

Duncan Austin said: “Totally pointless! What do the cyclists do at the end of the cycle lane which is only a few hundred yards long. Complete joke.”
