Experts have been chosen to work on Queens Square’s new water feature.

Fountains Direct has been chosen by Crawley Borough and West Sussex County councils to work with the design team to provide technical and design expertise on the water feature, which will be a focal point of the new square.

The councils are spending £3.2m on redeveloping the square and the Surrey-based company has been chosen to design the layout and technical specification of the planned LED illuminated fountain jets.

Fountains Direct has designed similar water features at locations including Somerset House and the Royal Academy of Arts in London.

Nick Roberts, managing director of Fountains Direct, said: “ We will work with the whole design team to ensure that local people and visitors to Queens Square are able to enjoy the new fountain when it’s first switched on and for many years to come”.

A council spokesman said the Queens Square redevelopment would: “redefine the area as the heart of the town centre, creating a high quality, inviting, distinctive and enjoyable public space encouraging more people to visit, stay and make use of the area.”

It is also hoped to encourage new and existing building owners and businesses to invest in the area, potentially acting as a catalyst for wider regeneration.

Work will begin in March 2016.

Councillor Peter Smith, Cabinet member for Planning and Economic Development, said: “The water feature will be the focal point of the new square, providing an attractive and flexible space.”

John O’Brien, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “The fountain jets will be a distinctive feature for visitors to Queens Square to enjoy.

“We are all looking forward to seeing Queens Square colourfully transformed when the water feature is completed.”
