Goodwood SpeedWeek: All you need to know about the interactive online event

Goodwood SpeedWeek starts today, so here’s a look at what’s going on at the virtual event over the weekend.

What is Goodwood SpeedWeek?

Inspired by the Festival of Speed and Revival, which were both postponed this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, this one-off virtual event will celebrate the greatest elements of both Goodwood events.

Due to the ongoing restrictions put in place by the Government it is taking place behind closed doors event, with no spectators allowed within the motor circuit.

A range of Goodwood’s partners have helped create a uniquely immersive, interactive broadcast occasion to be made available free-of-charge online.

In a motorsport world-first, millions of spectators can enjoy live content with full 360-degree audio and visual interaction, streamed on Facebook.

Using the SpeedWeek Hub on the Goodwood website, fans can take a virtual paddock tour, use chat rooms to question their favourite drivers, and interact with the action through quizzes, polls, competitions and a ‘podium predictor’.

When road cars feature on the live stream fans can press a button to add their favourite cars into a garage.

What events are taking place?

The Revival’s Kinrara Trophy has been permanently renamed in honour of ‘Mr Goodwood’, Sir Stirling Moss, who died earlier this year.

The Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy will be contested for the first time at Goodwood SpeedWeek, with a 60-minute, two-driver race featuring early 1960s GT cars from the peak of Sir Stirling’s career.

Meanwhile, the Shootout at Goodwood SpeedWeek pits a variety of the greatest cars and drivers in history against each other in a once-in-a-lifetime battle to set the fastest time around the Goodwood Motor Circuit.

Running one at a time, from a standing start, the drivers will be on maximum attack throughout the weekend, building to the winner-takes-all finale at 3pm on the Sunday afternoon, which will be broadcast live on ITV1.

Among the stars in action will be three Le Mans legends Romain Dumas, Tom Kristensen and Emanuele Pirro, who will go head to head around the 2.38-mile course in three of the most successful racing cars ever built.

SpeedWeek will also honour three major motorsport anniversaries with demonstrations to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Formula 1, the 50th anniversary of Porsche’s first Le Mans victory, and TWR Jaguars at Le Mans.

Cars to feature include those driven by Sir Stirling Moss, Graham Hill, Emerson Fittipaldi and Jenson Button.

The Michelin Supercar Run and First Glance classes at the broadcast event will feature everything from the 300mph SSC Tuatara to the brand new Ford Puma ST, giving viewers the chance to see some of the most exotic supercars in action, alongside the very latest road cars.

One of the most exciting debuts will be Lotus’ new Evija – the Norfolk manufacturer’s first electric hypercar – as well as the new Evora 410 Sport and Exige 430.

McLaren will be embracing the ‘Past, Present, Future’ theme of SpeedWeek with a range of different cars across the three days, in liveries evoking great McLaren colour schemes from the past.

Four other renowned British brands – Aston Martin, Land Rover, Rolls-Royce and Jaguar – will also be showcasing their latest and most iconic models, as well as other manufacturers from around the world.

The event will celebrate the future of automotive technology with demonstrations of some of the latest innovations transforming the world of motorsport and mobility, including, The Racing Mind; Einride will undertake an autonomous lap on the motor circuit; a live grid walk of cars charting the evolution of technology in F1 through the ages; a all-electric race between the Virgin Formula E, Electric Harley and Drone racer on the Driftkhana course; a behind-the-scenes look of Gravity and how you train to become a jet suit pilot; and drift demonstration from the all-electric Mach-E Mustang 1400 prototype.

An impressive line-up of presenters will cover all the action from the weekend, with well-known faces and influencers across motorsport, automotive and lifestyle.

They include television broadcaster and BBC Radio 2 DJ Dermot O’Leary; motoring and technology TV presenter Rory Reid; Capital FM Breakfast presenter Siân Welby; and former World Endurance Champion and Grand Prix winner Mark Webber.

There are a range of activities and competitions to take part in over the weekend on social media – including Spirit of SpeedWeek, Central Feature Competition, Revival Best Dressed, Design a Mini – Children’s Competition and beat the pros on Gran Turismo Sport

When does SpeedWeek take place?

Goodwood SpeedWeek starts today (October 16) at the Goodwood Motor Circuit and runs through until Sunday {October 18}, with the event streamed live online for fans to watch from home.

SpeedWeek will be streamed free-of-charge on https://www.goodwood.com/motorsport/goodwood-speedweek/|goodwood.com} through two live streams – a track stream for all the races and demonstrations, along with a SpeedWeek stream, presented by Dermot O’Leary, Rory Reid, Siân Welby and Mark Webber.

The track stream starts at 9.15am on Friday, and 8.10am on Saturday and Sunday, while the SpeedWeed stream starts at 12pm on Friday and 10am on Saturday and Sunday.

It will also be broadcast live on ITV1 and ITV4 during the event:

• Friday, October 16 – 4.30pm-6.30pm (ITV4).

• Saturday, October 17 – 2pm-4pm (ITV4).

• Sunday, October 18 – 2pm-4pm (ITV1).
