Horley care home residents enjoy live virtual cookery demonstration
To celebrate National Vegetarian Week, staff and residents at Barchester’s Wykeham House care home in Horley were treated to an interactive virtual cookery demo courtesy of chef, Alex Connell, from Vegetarian for Life.
Chef Alex whipped up some tasty, healthy vegetarian snacks in a live, interactive cookery demo.
Much to residents’ delight, Wykeham House head chef Robert had prepared the same recipes so that residents could try all the dishes.
Residents sampled delicious, light and summery veggie dishes including Borlotti bean and dill pate, Greek fritters with Tzatziki and Coronation 'chicken' pastries, all finished off with a sweet and simple but totally yummy banana bread.
Alex said: “It was an absolute pleasure to be able to prepare these dishes for the Barchester residents and even more so because they got to taste them, despite my not being able to be there in person.
"Thanks to all the chefs in Barchester homes across the country who supported me to deliver this really lovely activity.”
Lucy Tomlinson, resident experience manager for Barchester Healthcare, added: “We have been using technology to keep our residents and patients connected with their loved ones as well as offer virtual events, entertainment and activities throughout the pandemic.
"We are excited to work with our amazing partners like Vegetarian for Life to bring a wide range of fantastic experiences into our homes for all to enjoy.
"It was fantastic to see the residents all enjoying the recipes, they were so well received.
“Our varied life enrichment programme keeps residents active and socially connected, providing a daily choice of engaging physical, mental and spiritual activities tailored to residents’ interests and abilities.”
General manager, Julia Christodoulides, said: “This was a virtual cookery demo with a difference, it was brilliant that our residents were able to taste the recipes as they were being prepared.
"It was a really enjoyable afternoon, we’re so grateful to Alex and Vegetarian for Life.”
