New fears have been voiced about asylum seekers being accommodated at a Crawley hotel and have led to it being labelled a ‘migrant holding centre.’

Holidaymakers staying at the Europa Hotel in Maidenbower have been left shocked and upset after discovering on arrival that a number of refugees are being housed there.

And this week Crawley MP Henry Smith said that he would be reiterating his concerns to the Home Office.

He said: “Last year I personally met with the Home Secretary to explain the inappropriateness of asylum seekers being temporarily housed at the Europa Hotel in Maidenbower and shortly afterwards was pleased to see the practice discontinued.

“ However, I have been concerned at recent reports the contractor which handles dispersement of is using the location again. I will be going back to the Home Office to reiterate my concerns.”

A company known as Clearsprings Ready Homes acts on behalf of the Home Office to find temporary accommodation for asylum seekers.

But holidaymakers have taken to the travel website TripAdvisor to talk of their shock at discovering refugees at the Europa.

One who stayed last month described the hotel as a ‘refugee holding centre.’

Another, who stayed on February 16, said: “The place was full of refugees/immigrants. All over the place, they were all sat around reception so there was nowhere we could sit, and they made us feel really uncomfortable.”

Another guest added: “The hotel was full of male refugees” and added: “We do feel very sorry for the predicament of these people but why on earth take bookings from holiday travellers who expect a reasonable standard of service and hygiene.

“It has become a migrant holding centre with minimum facilities.”

No-one at the Europa Hotel was available to comment.
