Horsham District Council cabinet member for Horsham town centre and armed forces champion councillor Peter Burgess said: “Whilst we will mark this occasion properly, it is with a heavy heart that I must ask people not to attend the Carfax this year in order to protect the health and wellbeing of local veterans and the public.

“We will ensure our wreath laying is a fitting tribute to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice and that of course, our veterans and their loved ones are very much in our thoughts and prayers at this special time.”

Chairman of Horsham District Council Cllr Karen Burgess said although the lack of a traditional service is ‘deeply disappointing’ everyone can play a part in marking the important occasion respectfully.

She added: “I would encourage as many people as possible to participate in their own personal moments of Remembrance, whether that be watching services on television or pausing for the national Two Minute Silence at 11am in the safety of their own homes.”

The public are urged to watch the national service at the Cenotaph which will be broadcast nationwide on BBC One, Sky and ITV and the council’s ‘Horsham Remembers at Home’ web page will have details of ‘Remembrance at Home’ related activities and events.

A spokeswoman said: “You can visit the Royal British Legion’s Remembrance Sunday website for more details: https://www.britishlegion.org.uk/get-involved/remembrance/remembrance-events/remembrance-sunday
