Stationery supplies chain Staples has announced it will be closing its Crawley store.
The shop, at County Oak business park, London Road, will shut on May 24.
It’s unfortunate they are heading along these lines but clearly they cannot competeCllr Peter Lamb, leader of Crawley Borough Council
A spokesman did not reveal how many jobs were at risk but said the closure came after an increase in the number of customers shopping online.
He added Staples did not plan to open another store in town. A source said shop workers were informed on April 1 the store was closing.
The spokesman said Staples customers would be able to continue to shop online.
Peter Lamb, leader of Crawley Borough Council, said: “The move to online is inevitable because it’s more convenient in a lot of ways.
“It’s unfortunate they are heading along these lines but clearly they cannot compete.”
He added: “Certainly I find it very worrying when you have a large section and a large sector of employment seemingly disappearing en masse.”
Cllr Lamb said the retail sector remained Crawley’s biggest employer, accounting for 17 per cent of all jobs.
The Staples spokesman added: “We continually evaluate our store performance to ensure we’re operating the business in the best way.
“We are committed to providing great service and every product businesses need whether it’s in-store, online or through mobile.”
