Teachers and school staff in the Horsham and Mid Sussex area recognised with awards

Teachers and school staff from the Horsham and Mid Sussex area have been honoured in the Sussex Teacher of the Year Awards.

Oliver Perkins, of Ifield Community College, was named as STEM Teacher of the Year. Judges said students and parents alike have paid tribute to Oliver’s positive attitude and passion for teaching Maths.

They said: “His creative and patient approach, combined with additional support whenever needed, ensures students understand and enjoy the work. Oliver is a true role model who inspires young people to achieve their best.”

Bohunt School head Georgette Ayling and her team at the Horsham school were named as District Team of the Year.

Judges commented that Georgette and her team have established a joyful, purposeful, thriving school that has the highest expectations of its students. Through high quality teaching, unparalleled opportunities, and the innovative use of technology, the team is helping to produce students who have the character and attitude to be game-changers.

Debbie Taylor, from Steyning C of E Primary School was named as Business Manager of the Year. Judges said: “Debbie is a skilled Business Manager whose contribution is fundamental to the success of the school she holds so dear. She balances each aspect of her role with efficiency and poise. Debbie is a safe pair of hands, a confidante, and an active and respected member of the school community.”

Simon Knowles, of Steyning C of E Primary School, was awarded District Sports Teacher of the Year with judges saying: “Simon ensures that pupils from Reception to Year 6 flourish no matter what their capabilities. He organises sports days and competitions, always emphasising sportsmanship and teamwork over winning. An inspiration to all, Simon has persuaded staff, parents and even former pupils to volunteer their time to support the sports provision.”

Emma Payne, of Leechpool Primary School, was named as Wellbeing Champion of the Year. Judges said: “Emma is Assistant Head Teacher and Inclusion Leader at Leechpool Primary and instrumental in the development of the school’s impressive SEND provision. She is a master at finding the right technique, solution or external agency to help pupils, while parents are thrilled to see their children realise their potential.”

District Secondary School Teacher of the Year went to Hannah Nibloe. of Sackville School with judges saying Hannah is a caring, driven and methodical teacher of dance and Head of Inclusion within a growing and challenging school.

“She nurtures students’ ability to express themselves, leads the pupil premium provision supporting disadvantaged students, and has placed mental health and wellbeing at the heart of the school.”
