Temporary waste site to open in Crawley following blaze

A temporary household waste site is to open in Crawley on Monday following a fire at the depot in July.

The temporary site will be set up on the lower part of the existing waste site in Metcalf Way.

West Sussex County Council says that visitors are likely to face delays ‘due to the nature of the temporary site.’

The original waste site building is to remain closed for around two months while repairs are carried out.

The temporary site will be open for all waste items except hazardous waste, including toxic liquids and asbestos, soil, hardcore and plasterboard.

No trailers or vans are allowed and no charity or trade waste.

The county council says people with trailers can use waste sites at East Grinstead.

Plasterboard is accepted at Horsham waste site at Hop Oast and asbestos at Burgess Hill waste site.

Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex county council cabinet cember for environment, said: “Following the large fire at Crawley Household WasteRecycling Site in July, I am pleased to confirm that this temporary facility is now ready to open.

“I understand the inconvenience this has caused many local residents in recent months and I would like to thank you all for your patience.”

The site will re-open on Monday (September 28) and will be open until 6pm every day until Sunday October 4.

From Monday October 5, winter opening hours will come into effect and the site will be open from 9am – 4pm each day excluding Thursdays.

All other waste sites in West Sussex will change to their winter opening hours from Thursday October 1.

Covid-19 precautions will be in place to encourage social distancing.

Residents will need to provide ID, such as a current driving licence, to prove they are West Sussex residents.
