Thousands of Sussex residents have signed a petition calling for billionaire Donald Trump to be barred from entering the UK.

Almost 450,000 people across the country have put their names to the petition after the Republican presidential hopeful said that Muslims should be temporarily stopped from entering the US.

A total of 8,039 people from Sussex have signed the e-petition as of today (Thursday December 10), which is available on the dedicated website.

The largest number of signatures has come from the Brighton Pavilion constituency at 1,405, with Hove (885), Brighton Kemptown (646) and Mid Sussex (493) the next highest.

After that is Horsham (456), Lewes (448), Chichester (417), Arundel and South Downs (413), Crawley (412), East Worthing and Shoreham (412), Hastings and Rye (388), Eastbourne (375), Wealden (371), Bexhill and Battle (347), Worthing West (330), and Bognor Regis and Littlehampton (241).

The petition reads: “The UK has banned entry to many individuals for hate speech. The same principles should apply to everyone who wishes to enter the UK.

“If the United Kingdom is to continue applying the ‘unacceptable behaviour’ criteria to those who wish to enter its borders, it must be fairly applied to the rich as well as poor, and the weak as well as powerful.”
