Volunteers begin planting 6,000 daffodil bulbs in Rudgwick

It was organised by Ellens Green and Rudgwick Gardening Association (EGRGA) which is aiming to plant 6,000 bulbs in total to turn the green space south of Queen Elizabeth Road into a ‘sea of yellow’.

The ‘Yellowing of Rudgwick’ is the vision of the association’s show secretary, Simon Quail, who hopes more volunteers will come out this week to help finish the job.

He said: “As you drive into Rudgwick village from Watts Corner heading north you will notice, on the right-hand side, a generous piece of grass I call a greensward.

“I have a vision that this sea of green should be flooded with a sea of yellow daffodils, to wave a golden welcome to visitors and residents alike as they enter the southern gateway of this Saxon village.

“To fulfil my vision, 6,000 daffodils have been purchased with the organising support of EGRGA.

“Rudgwick businesses have been pleased to contribute to the Yellowing of Rudgwick, including Sunninghill Developments and BP Wealth Management.

“We still have 5,000 more to plant. If we had 50 people planting 100 bulbs each, in no time it would be ‘job done’!

“I invite my fellow Rudgwickians to come along to the Queen Elizabeth greensward this coming Friday, October 16, after 11am, or Saturday, October 17, after 10am, armed with a bucket and a sharp spade and we will give you a patch to plant, making your contribution in creating a yellow welcome into our friendly village.

“Your support will be hugely appreciated by residents and every visitor over the next 30 plus years.”
