The crossing was installed by West Sussex County Council after concerns about safety at the junction with Water Lane / Thakeham Road, close to Thakeham Primary and Steyning Grammar School’s Rock Road campus.

Engineers devised the unusual diagonal crossing point because of problems with narrow pavements and poor visibility.

As a first in the county, the project attracted the attention of Kit Bradshaw - the man behind the YouTube channel Bradshaw's Guides - and he said it had 'certainly got them all talking!'

He said of his channel: "I'm Kit Bradshaw, and if you like travel, history, geography and watching a grown man get overly enthusiastic about pedestrian crossings, post boxes and anything else that most people generally don't think about then this is the channel for you! Everything is written, produced, directed and edited by me and all music is composed by me too. Pleased feel free to message me about any interesting things or places you'd like to see me make a video about in the future! Instagram: @bradshawsguides, Twitter @bradshawsguides."

And he added: "Why go to Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo when you can come to Thakeham?"

Other sights to catch his eye have included post boxes in East Preston and a sunset stroll up Highdown Hill.
