Petanque: Controversy set to continue as a public meeting is announced

An open meeting will be held so that people can share their views on plans for a pitch in Crawley.

The proposal for a 15m by 4m gravel pitch in Crawley Memorial Gardens has already proved to be controversial.

Some said the £2,000 was simply a waste of money, as the pitch would be a target for vandals, while Cllr Brenda Burgess (Con, Three Bridges) voiced the concern that the park’s peace and quiet would be disrupted.

The row made the national media, prompting Crawley MP Henry Smith to complain that Crawley Borough Council was making the town a laughing stock.

Today (March 19), petanque enthusiast and cabinet member for wellbeing Cllr Chris Mullins (Lab, Gossops Green) announced a meeting to discuss the matter.

He said: “The potential for petanque in the Memorial Gardens has generated a lot of interest so I’m holding an open meeting for anyone who wants to give me their views – whether positive or negative – in the Civic Hall on Tuesday 29 March at 6pm.

“Residents decide the priorities of their council and I will listen to what they to say.”
