The Mayor of Crawley said the borough council’s first carol singing event ‘epitomised the spirit of Christmas’.

Residents joined the Crawley Millennium Concert Band and Crawley Baptist Church Choir to sing the festive songs in Queens Square on Sunday (December 20).

Cllr Chris Cheshire said: “It was a bit of an act of faith on our part because we haven’t done it before.

“It was something that I had felt we hould have done for years - to sing carols in the heart of the town somewhere near Christmas because we are very lucky to have the Millennium Concert Band and singing carols to me epitomises the spirit of Christmas.” She hoped the event would become an annual tradition after the square’s £3.2m revamp was finished by Christmas 2017.

She said: “It will lend itself very well to it.

“It’d be an old tradition in a new setting.”
