PLOUGHING ON REGARDLESS OF FOOT-AND-MOUTH OUTBREAK

WEST Grinstead and District Ploughing and Agricultural Society holds its annual ploughing match and show on Saturday, September 15 at Aglands Farm in Pict Lane, Cowfold, hosted by Mr and Mrs V A G Tregear.

The society, established in 1871, has been holding shows for more than 125 years and is very pro-active in promoting the interests of the local farming community.

In addition to the 11 different ploughing classes, including novice, open, vintage and the great crowd-puller that is horse- ploughing, there will also be a display of steam-ploughing.

Because of the recent foot and mouth outbreak, the popular livestock show will not be held this year.

Instead, there will be a selection of alternative main-ring attractions, including a parade of hounds from Crawley and Horsham Hunt, the incredibly popular terrier and ferret racing, a clay pigeon shoot and competitive training by the Utility Gundog Society, including a scurry open to all.

Field produce competitions will be held, with entries later auctioned for the society's funds, and there will be a domestic produce stall with a range of home-made cakes.

Numerous other attractions will include a tug-of-war, coconut shy, farrier display, wellie-throwing and skittles, with the emphasis on entertainment for the whole family as well as education in farming and country life, including tractor and trailer rides around the show.

There will be catering facilities, a licensed bar, many trade stands and demonstrations, as well as the annual raffle.
