Police are appealing for witnesses to the attack yesterday night (March 26)

Police said the 32-year-old man was found lying on the ground at around 10.45pm at the railway approach in East Grinstead and has been taken to hospital with a head injury and multiple fractures to his cheek and eye socket.

A police spokesman said the man had reportedly been crossing the road when a car, described as a white Jaguar, pulled alongside him.

According to police, the driver then got out and punched the man several times before getting back in his car and driving off in the direction of Brooklands Way.

Officers remained on scene throughout the night and part of the road was closed until midday today (March 27) in order to secure evidence.

Anyone who was in the area at the time and may be able to assist with police enquiries is asked to contact Sussex Police on 101 quoting serial 1248 of 26/03.
