Police appeal following assault at station

British Transport Police are appealing for witnesses after a conductor was assaulted at Mertham station, causing delays for commuters this morning (Friday, July 7).

A spokesman for British Transport Police (BTP) said: “We were called at 8.19am on Friday, July 31, to reports of an assault on a member of rail staff at Merstham station.

“Colleagues from Surrey Police also attended and spoke to a man who had been assaulted by a man who subsequently left the station.

“No arrests have been made and enquiries into the incident are ongoing.”

The incident came to light on Twitter as frustrated commuters tweeted Southern Rail to ask what had caused the delays.

Around 8.30am, Southern Rail tweeted: “There is a train currently a stand at Merstham on the line travelling away from London, delays may occur.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40, or text 61016, quoting reference 114 of 31/07/2015. Information can also be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
