Police target railways in bid to fight drugs

LITTLEHAMPTON railway station was one of many across Sussex targeted by police in a bid to force out drug dealers.

Sixty-five people were stopped when British Transport Police, BTP, joined forces with Sussex police at the weekend.

BTP Detective Constable Bob Cager said Operation Pentagon involved the use of drugs dogs along with uniform and plain-clothed officers.

"We have information about drugs making their way into town centres, with the railways being used as a major transportation route.

"It is our intention to prevent the transportation and distribution of drugs on trains and railway stations within Sussex."

Arrests were made for drugs possession and possession of weapons, as well as three cases of drunk and disorderly, and one for public order offences.

"We want to reassure passengers that we are taking this seriously and we are determined to make sure they are able to travel in safety, without having to encounter criminals on the network.

"Police are also keen to ensure that railway staff can work on trains and at stations in safety, without having to encounter drug dealing or drug taking."

Anyone who witnesses drug dealing or drug taking on the railways is urged to report such crimes directly to the BTP by calling 0800 40 50 40.
