Police’s plea for help in beating hate crime

AMBASSADORS are needed to help Sussex Police in its fight against hate crime.

This month the police force will be hosting a range of events seeking to recruit hate crime ‘ambassadors’ whose job would be to raise awareness of what a hate crime is.

The first event is taking place at Littlehampton Police Station on Thursday (July 9) from 1-3pm.

Hate crime sergeant Peter Allan said: “We know that a lack of understanding about what hate crime is and at what level you can report it to the police are two of the biggest challenges.

“I hope these sessions will be a springboard for discussions about hate crime, in the pub, at work, at the gym, at the many clubs and activities people take part in on a regular basis.”

The role could see the ambassadors helping encourage victims of hate crimes to contact police or partner agencies across Sussex.

All that is required is that volunteers attend a two-hour awareness session.

Other sessions are planned at Hastings Police Station from 7.30pm to 9.30pm on Monday, July 20, and Brighton Police Station from noon to 2pm on July 26.
