The petition, which was launched on change.org, raised concerns for the safety of people crossing Ifield Drive, and asked for signs to be put up reminding drivers that the speed limit was 30mph.

With a number of schools in the area – including two for youngsters with special needs – as well as families with young children,  one of the signatories said: “It’s no use doing things when something bad happens – please do it now before things get too late.”

Another said she had started to wear high visibility clothing when crossing the road in the dark.

She added: “[It’s] getting to be annoying with the idiots in their tin boxes thinking pedestrians are skittles.

“The crossing at the Warren Drive end is very dangerous. Do drivers know they have indicators?”

Questions were asked about the conduct of some drivers and whether there were enough crossing points along the road.

One woman said: “I live on Ifield Drive and they use it as a race track.

“The speed they get up to is very scary. I walk children to and from St Margaret’s School every day and am always on high alert for speeding cars and motor bikes.

“Wheel spins out of shopping parade parking is also not acceptable.”

A county council spokesman said: “There are currently no plans for new signage in Ifield Drive.
