Gatwick recommendation likely to be ‘a fudge’

Speculation is growing that the Airports Commission report, due this week, will ‘fudge’ the question of where the UK’s new runway should go.

The independent body’s recommendations for how Britain can ‘maintain its status as an international hub’ are expected to be published on Wednesday morning.

National media have reported that the commission is likely to recommend expanding Heathrow - either with a new runway or an extension to an existing one - but will not rule out the possibility of building a new runway at Gatwick.

Senior Conservative politicians, several of whom have constituencies that would be affected by Heathrow expanding, have publicly opposed any plans involving Heathrow.

David Cameron and Boris Johnson have also said they would block any extension of Heathrow.

If the report leaves all options on the table, Government members will have time to resolve the disagreement within the party, ahead of any final decision.
