The Kemp Town Society was set up 40 years ago in order to preserve the culture, integrity and history of Kemp Town’s buildings.

Now, with plans for phase two of the Brighton Marina development being revealed, the society and the area’s residents have expressed concern over how the new construction could impede their sea view and diminish neighbouring architecture.

Chairman Simon Smith said: “We want to make sure the future plans are more sympathetic to the surroundings’ architectural heritage.”

Brighton Marina was first constructed in 1968 when an Act of Parliament decreed that buildings should rise no higher than the cliff.

The ruling has since been overturned allowing developers to build the phase-one tower block and start planning phase two.

Mr Smith said: “It is going to be an eyesore for people who live up here on the cliffs of Kemp Town.”

On November 29, the architect for the marina development will address members of the society about the plans.

This will give society members the opportunity to voice their concerns and those of the residents.

“We want to ensure that what goes up there blends well with what has been there for over 200 years,” said Mr Smith.

Mr Smith said it is important during the meeting for everyone to listen to each other and for it to be as constructive as possible.

The meeting will take place at Sussex Square.
