Plans for Crawley flats at former ambulance station site

Plans to demolish Crawley’s former ambulance station and build 44 new flats have been submitted.

Developers have lodged a planning application with Crawley Borough Council for the site, surrounded by woodland on three sides off Ifield Avenue near West Green Park.

The scheme would be split up into two blocks containing a total of 44 flats.

The north-western block would be a staggered building with a maximum six-storey height containing 26 private flats, while the building on the south-eastern side of the site would be a maximum of four storeys including 18 affordable flats.

The development includes 26 car parking spaces, eight of which would have active electric vehicle charging points, and 31 cycle spaces.

The new buildings would have green walls and roofs as well as reclaimed timber play equipment.

Solar panels would also be installed across the development.

There would also be new tree planting along Ifield Avenue and enhancements to the area of existing woodland within the site boundary.

In order to address noise impact a passive cooling and ventilation strategy has been proposed, where acoustically attenuated trickle ventilators to bedrooms and living rooms are desired.

Another proposed measure for noise protection is the installation of acoustic facades on both residential blocks. These facades have been located on the south and north-west elevations of both blocks to protect against noise coming from Crawley Avenue and the roundabout at the junction with Ifield Avenue.

According to the developer: “The proposed development provides a mix of housing along with communal amenity space that maintains a strong connection with the neighbouring areas and wider context. The approach seeks to positively respond to the opportunities and constraints presented within the site and provides an opportunity to deliver a high quality sustainable development.”
