Developer Simco Homes wants to build 15 flats with commercial space on the ground floor on the corner of Station Way and High Street just north of the level crossing.

The site has served as the car park for the Taj Mahal restaurant, which is just across High Street.

The proposed five-storey building would have two ground floor commercial units, nine two-bedroom apartments and six one-bedroom apartments, communal lobby, 18 cycle parking spaces, bin stores and stair and lift access to all floors.

An outline planning application has been submitted to Crawley Borough Council.

The application says: “The proposed development has sought to respect the established scale and character of the surrounding built environment. What is proposed is a design that ranges in height, stepping from five storeys at the eastern end of the site adjacent to the Station Gateway development to a single storey at the west end of the site.

“The external materials would be a combination of a coloured brick, with high performance aluminium doors and windows.”

Following pre-application advice with council officers the number of residential units and amount of commercial space have both been reduced.

A loading bay is proposed for the commercial units but there are no parking spaces proposed for the new residents.

The applicant justifies this given the short distance to public transport options and the town centre.

The application concludes: “Through its redevelopment, the site will not only make a valuable contribution to the housing stock in Crawley but will do so in a highly sustainable location. Access to public transport will promote sustainable transport, as well as promoting healthy living through walking and cycling within the town.”
