Strategy to reduce serious accidents on West Sussex roads

A new approach to reducing the number of serious accidents has been unveiled by West Sussex County Council.

Residents can share their views through an online survey on the proposed Road Safety Framework, which is based on ‘Vision Zero’, a safer system aspiring towards a future with no deaths on West Sussex roads.

Through the framework West Sussex County Council is aiming to cut the number of people killed or seriously injured (KSI) by 25 per cent between now and 2020.

But when the draft document was discussed by county councillors before Christmas, campaigners pointed out that the number of cyclist KSIs had doubled since 2010 and argued that the framework would not offer solutions that were going to work.

John O’Brien, WSCC’s cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Road deaths and injuries impose a terrible human cost.

“That is why we want to take a new approach to how road safety is tackled in the county.

“We would like to know if the public share our view, so please take a look at the online survey and let us know your thoughts.”

WSCC said it would continue to focus on reducing casualties by using statistics and targeting particular groups or locations.

But ‘Vision Zero’ would put more emphasis on examining the chain of events that increase the risks of crashes and reducing the severity of any injuries when they do happen.

For example, since crashes occur when people drive between work and home, the county council would work with businesses to look at the causes of crashes to help them reduce risks to their employees.

Factors which could help prevent road deaths in the future include safer cars, safer road environments, education, training, publicity, enforcement, greater use of data, and better partnership working.
