Last week the Communication Workers Union (CWU) announced that Saturday would be a national day of action across the UK as part of the campaign to fight Crown Office closures and build a stronger future for the Post Office.

The Crawley protest will be between 10am and 2pm outside the post office in The Boulevard, with CWU members, local Labour Party members and other supportive groups.

Crawley Labour party say there will also be a public meeting to discuss the closure at 3pm in Crawley’s Civic Hall.

Signatures for the #SaveOurPostOffice campaign will be gathered throughout the day.

Commenting on the plans, CWU Branch Secretary Andy Morrey said:“The Post Office is the heart of Crawley, and our union will fight to keep it open and ensure those services are there for many years to come. We urge as many members of the public as possible to join us on the day.”

CWU Regional Secretary Paul Carpenter said: “This is a fight not only to protect local Post Offices now but to grow them in the future.

“We are calling for the introduction of a Post Bank so as major banks remove themselves from the High Street we can offer people an ethical and community based banking option.

“We will also not sit idly by whilst well rewarded and unionised jobs are transferred into the minimum wage paying, bargain basement employer that is WHSmith.”
