There were celebrations at the Observer when one of its publications scooped a prestigious award.

etc magazine has won the Gold Award for the Niche Publication of the Year at The Newspaper Society awards.

The free glossy lifestyle magazine impressed the judges with its interesting local, fashion and lifestyle features and stunning design.

The judges said: "It is a quality product with interesting editorial content and in a great format."

etc editor Clare Wallace was presented the award by The Newspaper Society president Michael Pelosi at the a prestigious event last Thursday at the Leeds Marriott Hotel, where many colleagues across the industry and from around the country enjoyed a black-tie dinner.

They were also able to see all the shortlisted publications in their full glory on a large plasma screen.

Clare said: "It was a fantastic evening and we were delighted to be presented with this prestigious award.

"etc has grown from strength to strength in the past four years and proves how well the etc team work together to have made it so successful.

"It is a huge achievement for everyone involved and it is wonderful to have this recognition."

And there was more cause to celebrate with the Observer receiving a highly commended in the Newspaper of the Year for the South East category and sports editor Steve Bone receiving a commendation in the sports journalist of the year category.

Executive editor for the Observer and etc Colin Channon said: "etc is an outstanding publication produced by an extremely talented and professional team.

"This award is richly deserved and will spur the team on to continue to provide top-class features and designs for readers across the county to enjoy."
