Recycling theme for flowers

IMAGINATIONS were allowed to run colourful riot as the Little Common Village Flower Club took on the subject of recycling in their three-day bank holiday festival.

The show, at St Martha's Church Hall, 'Second Time Around' saw the group use an environmental theme for their displays.

The arrangements used recycled products alongside selections of beautiful blooms.

Examples included 'Organic Ollie' made using organic crops, 'Headline News' featuring old copies of the Bexhill Observer and 'Front of Altar' with flowers suspended in mid-air.

The subject of oil was tackled in 'Liquid Gold' with sunflowers, olives and coconuts being used. 'Box Clever' made us of cardboard, while 'Winds of Change' saw flowers around a turbine.

Themes including bottles, tins and plastic were also taken on board.

The subject of recycling was even in mind in the refreshments area, with food tins used to house table flowers, leaflet place mats and paper table cloths.

A raffle was also held with items kindly donated by shops and businesses within Little Common.

Proceeds went towards Rachael's House, a respite hotel in Eastbourne for families with children who have life limiting illnesses.

Festival chairman Patricia Wright said: "I have a bee in my bonnet about recycling, so I wanted a festival that represented recycling. The original ideas are the festival committee's, but it's fascinating to see what people come up with when they're given a title.

"We spend a year planning it.

"We would like to say how much we appreciate the help of partners and friends. It's not just down to the members and it couldn't happen without them."
