Crawley Borough Council has issued 1,560 parking tickets so far this year.

The authority released a break-down of the charges for January 1 to March 20 following a Freedom of Information request.

It listed 340 for no waiting; 83 for loading/unloading; 38 for parked after the expiry of P&D time; 159 for no ticket; 344 for no permit or P&D; three for parked without valid permit; 37 for parked in bay with invalid permit or P&D; two for parked in a suspended bay/space; 11 for parked in bay not designated for vehicle; 14 for not parked correctly within bay; six for parked in a loading bay during restricted hours; 35 for parked for longer than permitted; 50 for parked in disabled bay without badge; 18 for parked on a taxi rank; one for parked on restricted bus stop/stand; ten for overstay; 37 for restricted area; 53 for parked after the expiry of paid time; 205 for no P&D ticket; 51 for parked in permit bay wihtout permit; ten for out of bay; 28 for parked in a disabled bay without valie badge; 21 for parked in a car park when close; and four for warning (no charge).

Southgate Community Forum chairman Mike Pickett said tickets were being issued because of a lack of parking spaces in town.

He said complaints over residents’ driveways being blocked by cars when Goffs Park’s car park was full had become ‘particularly vociferous’.

He urged people to sign his e-petition calling on West Sussex County Council to conduct a review of the town’s parking needs:
