Roof top drama ends

A STAND-off between police and a man threatening to jump off the top of a building in Lewes has ended.

The 24 year-old from Priory Road had been on the roof of the surgery on School Hill, since the early hours of this morning.

A police officer grabbed the man and dragged him to safety at about 1pm after attempts to talk him down failed.

He was detained under the Mental Health Act.

Insp Viv Johnson said: 'This was a life threatening situation and I really appreciate the co-operation of people of Lewes.

'This incident took place in the commercial heart of Lewes and impacted upon shoppers and traders. Fortunately the negotiators were able to resolve the situation safely."

A large part of the road was closed all morning causing traffic chaos.

The road has re-opened.
