Salute to workof sanctuary

OLYMPIA London International Horse Show, which takes place from December 17 to 22, celebrates its centenary this year.

The first international horse show took place in the historical Grand Hall at Olympia, and among the important competitions that make the show what it is today is the Veteran Horse Society Championship, sponsored by Dodson & Horrell.

Proving that it's not just the youngsters who have it all their own way at Olympia, thousands of horses aged 15 and over compete at local qualifying shows throughout the country. Just ten win the chance to represent their area at the finals, held during the morning of Friday, December 21.

All those visitors with tickets to the afternoon performance on that day can attend.

Show director Simon Brooks-Ward said: 'Although Olympia is best known for the prestigious show jumping and dressage classes, this lovely veteran class provides something a little different for the Olympia audiences and always seems to produce an exciting final.

'We are proud to host the culmination of the series.'

Last year's hotly contested final was eventually clinched by 23- year-old Cedrik of Richmore, owned by Mr R Mason-Williams and expertly ridden by Emma Walley. They had already proved themselves the best partnership in Wales before conquering the rest of Britain at Olympia.

A special prize was also presented to the Achievement Award Winner for 2007, Shear H20, and Olympic gold medallist Leslie Law, rider of the famous grey gelding, made the trip from America to collect it.

This year there have been more than 80 initial rounds across the country, with qualification to regional competitions on offer.

Competing at Olympia will be 10 horses who are all regional champions.

The Veteran Horse Society was founded in 2000, and since then has provided a very worthy service. The society rehomes hundreds of horses and ponies each year throughout the UK and has two rehabilitation centres.

With more than 5,000 members, most of whom show their veterans, the organisation plays an important role in caring for older horses.

Dodson & Horrell, supplier of feed, supplements and herbal products, provides backing for the society and sponsoring the veteran series is just one example of its commitment to the worthy cause. It also sponsors the Welcome Speed Stakes jumping class, which takes place at the Gala Evening Performance on Monday, December 17.
