Second bid to turn Crawley houses into 24 flats

Crawley Borough Council has registered developer Places for People Homes’ plans for the site in 56A-60 North Road, Three Bridges.

Councillors voted all against its previous scheme to demolish the bungalows and build 24 apartments and five houses at a meeting which was attended by almost 80 fuming residents waving ‘Hands off North Road’ signs in 2009.

A Planning Inspector dismissed an appeal against the council’s decision saying the proposed development would be ‘cramped’, lack amenity space and be out of place.

The developer owns the site and its Design & Access Statement for its new bid said: “The proposal seeks to provide affordable homes to meet the needs of a range of local people. This would benefit the existing local community in social terms, whilst the high quality design and consideration given to the scheme will be an asset to the local built environment.

“The design seeks to embrace the principles of development approved under the 2006 outline planning permission and embrace the comments of the planning inspector within the appeal decision in 2010.”
