Shetland pony escaped four times before it was put down

Police pursued the horse through the streets of Langley Green for an hour before it was caught on January 24.

Kim Davies, of Langley Green, volunteered to keep it until its owner was found.

She said the stallion broke through a fence and ran into nearby woodland that night.

He escaped from the woodland on January 26 and was found in a dairy farm the following afternoon.

The pony was enclosed in another field but sparked another police pursuit after he broke through barbed wire.

A spokesman for Surrey Police said: “A chestnut Shetland pony was reported running loose on Jan 28 at 11.50am in Partridge Lane, Newdigate.

“A further call was received shortly afterwards reporting that the pony was in Charlwood.

“Officers were sent to the scene to recover the pony but it was extremely distressed and could not be handled. The pony ran off and unfortunately fell into a nearby slurry pit.

“A vet was called and the pony was humanely destroyed and disposed of under the vet’s advice. This was done to prevent it from enduring a distressing death from inhaling the slurry.

“The owner has not come forward and no animals matching the description above have been reported missing in Surrey since January 20.”
