Simon's Legwork to Weightloss

Not so long ago Simon Chapman weighed 30 stones. Then he put his best foot forward, and walked away the excess weight - losing 17 stones in the last six years.

Now Simon is taking part in half-marathons, and dad Terry, also of Cuthbert Close, couldn't be more proud.

He phoned the Observer to say his 35 year old son had taken part in the Amsterdam half-marathon and had completed it in 2hrs 22 mins and 29 seconds.

Terry said: "That is 24 minutes faster than when he did the Hastings event. The course is very different but even so it is an achievement.

"I think it is fantastic - he is absolutely marvellous, and I wish I could do it, but I can't...he would show me up. He has done brilliantly, he really has."

Simon lost his weight by walking everywhere with the family dog, Willow, and taking his diet in hand, but these days he trains regularly with the Bexhill Runners, led by trainer Paul Holdaway of Lifestyle Gym in Western Road.

More than 20 from the Bexhill group made the weekend trip to Amsterdam, with 17 in all running in the half-marathon.

Simon said: "It was alright- it was more easy-going because it is so flat."

Terry added: "Simon turned up the following Wednesday for training - he was the only one...He just loves running."
