Something to shout about for Angela

RING out the old, ring in the new. . . Arundel is going into 2006 with a new town crier, Angela Standing.

And she is the first woman to take on the traditional role in the 350 years that Arundel has had a town crier, writes Roger Green.

Angela has already carried out her first public engagements, at several of the Christmas events held in the town, and she was pleased to tell the Gazette: "The voice is holding up well! It seems to be going OK."

Originally from Barnoldswick, Lancashire, she moved to Arundel in 1993 to work for the then Lord and Lady Arundel as nanny to their children.

A couple of months ago, on hearing that the previous town crier, David Golding, had stood down, and that there was a danger the position might be lost, she offered herself for the job.

"It would have been such a shame for the position to just fade away. Too many of our traditions are being lost to the modern way of life."

Angela lives just outside Arundel, at Warningcamp, with tree-feller husband Colin, and is kitted out with a colourful hat, robes and that all-important bell by Arundel Town Council.

The position is purely voluntary for events associated with the town council, and from the new year she will be available for the occasional private booking at weddings, conferences etc., for a discretionary fee.
