COMMUNITY NEWS & REVIEWS: Staplecross Village Hall. A couple of news items that some residents may not be aware of, and which cannot be allowed to pass unheralded. Not in any particular order of merit, but just to advise you that the community Village Hall, in Staplecross now has a new Caretaker/Cleaner. Richard Pine will be taking on the mantle of this simple but so important position with effect from Monday August 1. Village Hall Chairman, Hilary Ganly, and her fellow committee members, would all like to warmly welcome Richard to his new role and look forward to him becoming a more familiar face around the neighbourhood as time progresses. No doubt he will find it a bit strange to step into the role which has until her retirement, been so competently and proudly undertaken by Pauline Scowen, for so many years. Words cannot truly express the gratitude that we all sincerely feel for all the hard work that Pauline has carried out, often above and beyond the call of duty, on our behalf. She has often undertaken tasks and chores, not strictly within the remit of her work schedule, but just to help people out and to make sure the hall was always at its best at all time. Enjoy your '˜retirement' Pauline, it's so richly deserved. The other news' item that must also be mentioned is to say a huge thank you to Patricia and Barry Walker, for the donation of the two beautiful hanging baskets that now adorn the front porch-way to the village hall. Flowers always make such a difference to a building, and these two simple hanging baskets do just that, so thank you both for your kindness and generosity. It is very much appreciated.

THE HERMAN ASSOCIATION: Just to remind all you energetic sports girls and boys, that now the schools are closed and you are no doubt enjoying the summer holidays, - if you are interested in cricket then don’t forget to come along to the Herdman Pavilion, in Ewhurst Green as another exciting sporting opportunity is now available for all young cricketers, both boys and girls, between the ages of 6 and 12 years who would like to either learn the art of cricket or improve their skills in this very popular sport. Free cricket coaching will be held at the Herdman Pavilion and Field at Ewhurst Green (SatNav TN32 5TB) on Saturday mornings until Saturday September 3 inclusive and between 10am and 12 noon. Please bring the appropriate sport gear, tee shirt, joggers and trainers. Please note grown-ups, there is limited parking on the road only, not on any pathways, please, so please park prettily and be considerate to the residents. EAST SUSSEX COUNTY COUNCIL: Lots of children will have seen a librarian at one of their school assemblies over the last few weeks, where they will have heard about this year’s Summer Reading Challenge: The Big Friendly Read. All you have to do is to pop into any East Sussex Library as soon as possible and sign up to the Challenge. As long as children leave themselves enough time to read 6 books, throughout the summer holidays, as well as enjoying their school break and having fun, - they can sign up anytime before September 10. This year’s challenge celebrates 100 years since the birth of Roald Dahl and is open to all 4 to 11 year olds. Kerbside recycling has increased by the equivalent of an extra 18,000 full wheelie bins, thanks to East Sussex residents. This increase was seen after a recycling campaign was led by Eastbourne, Hastings and Wealden Borough Councils, working together with Rother District Council and which was supported by East Sussex County Council. This equates to an extra 3 percent of recycling in each bin, from December 2015 to March 2016, compared to the previous year. STAPLECROSS BOWLS CLUB: Three more matches are to be played out this week, two are home games with the last being a re-match but still local. Match no: 1 will be played on Saturday August 6 and the opponents will hail from nearby Beckley. This fixture will be part of the Mermaid League tournament. A few days rest then follows, in readiness for match No: 2 which will be played on Wednesday August 10 against the St Leonards team and this game will also be part of the Mermaid League tournament. Now for the re-match, this will be played on Friday August 12 commencing at 6.15pm on the Staplecross Playing field, Northiam Road, Staplecross and the team to beat will be our own Staplecross Stoolball Club who they last played in June of this year. If you do get chance to come along and watch any of these matches, please do so (especially the last one) supporters are always very welcome, so come along and cheer your side on.

STAPLECROSS STOOLBALL CLUB: As above, there are three matches to be played by our own local club, but these differ in that they are all away games. Sunday August 7 sees the team away for the Icklesham Tournament, followed by another away match on Tuesday August 9 when the team will play Ashburnham, this match has a 6.15pm start. Then it’s back home for a re-match against our own Staplecross Bowls Club on Friday August 12 commencing at 6.15pm. As stated in the previous column, please come along and support what promises to be a fun and friendly match, set amongst lovely surroundings and great company. So, come along, pick a side and cheer them on.

ROTHER RAMBLERS: Only two walks have been planned for this week both worth considering as the scenery is lovely. Walk No: 1 is arranged for Sunday August 7 and is a 10 mile undulating circular walk from Robertsbridge. The meeting point is the car park in Station Road, Robertsbridge OS EXP136 TQ737235. (SatNav TN32 5AN) at 10am. Please note that there is additional free car parking in Northbridge Street car park. As usual, a picnic lunch is again suggested. David is to be your walk leader on this occasion and you may contact him on 01580 852432 for all further details. Walk No: 2 is further afield but still in a beautiful part of the county. Organised for Wednesday August 10 this will be a delightful 8.5 mile circular walk of Alfriston. The meeting place will be Alfriston Primary School, in North Road, Alfriston. OS EXP123. TQ518034 (SatNav BN26 5XB) at 10am. There is roadside parking near the school. Please be aware that this walk will include some steep gradients, - but I’m sure the views will more than compensate for this. Once more, a picnic lunch is again suggested. Martin is your ‘walk leader’ for this outing and you may contact him on 01424 752793 for more information.

CHURCH SERVICES: Church services for the parish of Ewhurst will commence at St James the Great, Ewhurst Green on Sunday August 7 Trinity 11 at 9.30am. This service will include Holy Communion. A Family Service will follow directly after at St. Giles church, Bodiam at 11.15am. There will be no service at St Mark’s church, Staplecross today and if there is any church matter on which you feel you may need further assistance, or guidance, baptisms, weddings or sadly funerals; then do please get in touch.
