Caretaker manager Darren Sarll has said it will be a very proud day for him when Stevenage take on Crawley Town.

The club stalwart was handed the reins this week after Boro sacked former Tottenham and Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham.

Sheringham’s tenure at the Lamex saw just three points taken from a possible 24, and the club are currently fighting in 19th place just eight points above the relegation zone.

Sarll was brought up from his youth team role at the club to first team coach by his predecessor and has a long-term association with Stevenage.

Speaking to their official website, he said: “”Obviously it has been a trying, testing few days as the club parted company with Teddy, Kevin and Dmitri on Monday.

“All three were very good men, very professional and will undoubtedly reappear soon within the game. I would like to thank them personally for the past nine months.

“I would also like to thank the chairman and the board for the opportunity to take caretaker charge even if it was at the price of someone else’s misfortune.

“I will endeavour to not let them down and give the club something to smile about again. Returning pride to the town via our football club is vital to the clubs continual growth.

“As always, football goes on and we must go on. It presents me with an opportunity that as a local lad has been a dream of mine, ever since joining the club 12 years ago.

“When the chance to return was presented to me three years ago, it was always my intention to manage the club one day.

“Therefore it goes without saying that Saturday will be a very proud and important day for me and my family.”
