Students celebrate A-level success

Today(Thursday) was a day of mixed emotions for East Sussex A-level students. But the majority, it seems, will be happy with their performance.Pass rates were high across the board and some colleges achieved their best ever results.

Lewes 6th Form College celebrated with an overall pass rate of 99 per cent.

The results place Lewes again among the top colleges in the country for A-level success.

The A-C grades came out at 76 per cent, which is above the national average.

Six students achieved places at Oxford and Cambridge.

One student, Jonathan Constable from Chailey, will be celebrating his four grade-As in the USA where he is sponsored by a Fulbright Award.

With 3,128 A-level entries this summer, the college had the highest number of students taking A-levels in the south-east.

Students at Lewes Old Grammar School came through with a pass rate of above 98 per cent.

Natalie Dancey, Anna Whelan and Jonathan Young all found clutches of A-grades in their envelopes.

Aaron Kemp will be taking a place to read mathematics at Trinity College, Cambridge. His biology mark was among the top five in the country.

Head master Robert Blewitt said: 'Most of our students worked hard for these results and can move on with confidence to the next stage in their lives.'

Heathfield Community College saw a further improvement in attainment. An impressive 50 per cent of students achieved A-level passes at grades A-B with a 98 per cent pass rate overall.

Head teacher Alan Powell said: 'I am delighted that college results continue to improve.'

Students Levi Shirky and Matt Dalton achieved four A-grade passes.

Uckfield Community Technology College had one of its most successful years on record.

Of the 135 students sitting A-levels, 15 achieved straight As and 75 per cent grade C or above.

The A-level pass rate exceeded 99 per cent.

Head teacher Craig Pamphilon said: 'The students have performed at exceptional levels.'

One student achieved one of the highest grades in the country for A-level English.

St Leonards-Mayfield School made history, achieving the school's best ever results.

Nearly half the girls (19 of 42) gained at least three A-grades in their A-levels. And 59 per cent of the total grades awarded were As.

An impressive 79 per cent of grades were marked at A-B.

Acting headmistress Marion McGovern said: 'Their outstanding results come from the inner confidence they develop in the full lives they lead here.'

Notably, Veronica Chan, 18, achieved five A-grades in mathematics, history, biology, chemistry and Chinese and will read medicine at Oxford.

Head girl Katie de Klee, 18, produced four straight As in English, history, mathematics and chemistry.

Some students at St Bede's Senior School, Upper Dicker, literally danced their way to success.

While the school was celebrating a 98 per cent pass rate, every student who had been part of the Legat Professional Dance Course was celebrating the fact that each one of them had achieved an A-grade in at least one subject.

Topping the Legat success list were Louise Lister from Westham who achieved A-grades in dance, psychology and business studies and Hannah Brown who won straight As in dance, psychology and history of art.

The pass rate A and B at St Bede's was 57 per cent.

Students at Seaford Head Community College achieved some outstanding results. Average points per examination entry were 71.5 per cent - higher than in previous years.

Outstanding individual results included one student gaining four A-grades securing her place at Oxford University. Five other students gained three A grades again securing their places at university.

In year 12, four students achieved four A grades at AS and two year 11 students who were entered early for AS music achieved grade C.

Principal Lynton Golds said: 'We are all very proud of their achievements.'

Students at Newlands School, Seaford, had record results.

They achieved a superb 97 per cent overall pass rate, with 54 per cent of the results being at A or B-grade.

Top performers were Briony Price and Aubery Polaine.

Head master Oliver Price said: 'After the turmoil of the recent past it is wonderful to see these results.'
