Students from around the world learn to get in step at college event

A United Nations of students were challenged to walk the plank at Bognor Regis Community College.

The exercise to survive the test of balance and co-ordination was just one of a series which the pupils performed at an international team-building event.

A hundred of them from the UK, Portugal, Lithuania, Poland, Latvia, Russia, Bulgaria and Pakistan took part. Of those, 80 speak English as a second language.

They were fully integrated into teams and worked together to shoot baskets and cross a swamp among other exercises.

The event took place at the neighbouring Arena sports centre. It was organised and run by Karen Feneley, a higher-level teaching assistant who helps students with English as an additional language, and the college's director of specialism, Rachel MacKinney.

The college's sports leaders from Year 10, aged about 15, and Year 12 assisted.

Mrs Feneley said: "Initially, some of the students were a bit apprehensive but, once they started the activities, they all joined in and worked together, laughing and helping each other."

Miss MacKinney added: "We also discovered that many of the students had enjoyed playing table tennis and volleyball before they came to England.

"In response, we hope to offer these as part of our out-of-hours programme soon."
