NFU South East crops board chairman Matt Culley said: “We know that motorists find slow moving farm vehicles frustrating but there’s a very good reason for us farmers being on the roads.

“August is the main harvest period when we are gathering in the nation’s food – we’re doing a vital job.”

This month farmers are mainly harvesting cereals, particularly wheat, the world’s most important food crop.

Mr Culley added: “We’d ask drivers to be patient and drive courteously if they’re stuck behind a tractor and trailer or a combine harvester at this busy time in the farming year. Remember it’s your food on the road!”
