Sussex healthcare trust chief awarded CBE

Michael Wilson has been awarded a CBE (Commander of the British Empire) for his services to the NHS.

Mr Wilson has worked in the NHS for more than 30 years, starting as a nurse in 1982.

In 2010 he took up the post of chief executive of SASH, which runs East Surrey Hospital in Redhill, at a time when the trust’s operational and financial performance was among the worst in the country.

He helped to transform the performance of SASH and in 2014 the trust was rated ‘Good’ across the board by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), putting it among the best in the country for quality of services.

He said: “I am truly humbled to be honoured in this way especially at the time of the momentous celebrations for the Queen’s 90th Birthday. I wish to recognise the commitment and professionalism of everyone at SASH and across the NHS as a whole as I receive this remarkable award.”

Mr Wilson was named as one of the top 50 chief executives in the NHS by Healthcare Journal (NSJ) back in March.

The HSJ recognised his role in helping the trust become one of the top performing acute hospitals in the country and the magazine said he is now being talked about as a ‘system leader’.

Alan McCarthy, chairman of Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust said: “This outstanding tribute is a well-deserved recognition of Michael’s devotion and service to the NHS and the tremendous achievements of over 30 years.

“With an unwavering personal commitment to ensuring the best and safest care, he has spent significant time investing in and motivating staff, releasing their energy and confidence so that SASH has a bright future and allowing the Trust to deliver outstanding results.” 

Surrey and Sussex Healthcare Trust runs East Surrey Hospital in Rehill and provides services at Crawley and Horsham hospitals.
