Swings of spring hit Rustington early show entries

GARDENERS had to cope with the wildly fluctuating weather to have their flowers ready for Rustington Horticultural Association's 63rd annual spring show at the Woodland Centre.

Freezing conditions in mid-March were followed by rain and wind immediately before the show, leading to a fall in the number of entries, and especially in the daffodil classes.

However, this was offset by an encouraging rise in exhibits in other classes not affected by the weather, and the overall total of 341 was up on last year.

Among them were many new entries in the children's classes, sponsored by Eric Norrell and Christine Fry, with competitors receiving an Easter egg for each exhibit.

Cookery, handicrafts, floral art, photography, art and vegetable classes were also well-supported. Littlehampton Camera Club, as well as donating the prize money for the photographic classes, staged a display of members' images.
