Taxi driver beaten up and robbed

A TAXI driver was hit repeatedly over the head with a piece of wood and robbed of around £120.

The attack on the 59-year-old happened at the junction of Vermont Way and Montpelier Road in East Preston on Saturday about 12.30am after he was booked to pick up a fare at an address in Montpelier Road.

Because the road was dark he had left his taxi to find the address and used his torch to look for any sign of the customer.

A man then appeared from behind a hedge saying: "Are you the taxi driver?"

The taxi driver replied 'yes' and started walking back to his taxi as he had assumed it was his fare. But the suspect then hit him by his left eye with the wood. He then hit him again with the wood on the other eye saying: "Give me your money."
